As a former CIO of the US Department of Transportation (US DOT), with oversight of over $3.5B in annual technology investments, over 3,000 IT employees, 10,000 contractors, and over 200 major systems Nitin Pradhan, the co-founder of ScaleUP USA, was one of the top government leaders doing business with the private sector. Nitin realized then, that most US citizens and businesses, especially beyond the Washington DC metro region, had little to no understanding of how to sell to the US Federal Government and therefore do not even try or try incorrectly.
This makes doing business with the US Federal Government harder than it needs to be! For example, company’s business development and sales executives continue to make sales calls in the vast wilderness of the Federal Government without having a clear understanding of where the need may actually be, if funds are available or will be available or what contracts the Federal Government can actually utilize to buy the product or service. They often pitch the wrong product or service to the wrong person at the wrong time using the wrong method. In the process, they waste significant time and financial resources of both their company and the government executives.
As a case in point, during his term as a CIO of US DOT and a major government technology buyer, Mr. Pradhan met with hundreds of companies who pitched him “commodity” products or services already available to US DOT via existing contracts, arranged “demos” that were more a sales pitch than a trust building exercise and submitted expensively prepared “white papers” that were routinely discarded by government officials as glossy sales pitches into the nearest trash can!
There had to be a better way for companies to build trust with the government buyer (or large Fortune 500 accounts), improve buyer targeting, and increase win rate at a scale!
ScaleUP USA and NBC4, Washington DC has, therefore, launched the Learning Academy to work with the appropriate business experts as content partners to jointly develop courses for delivery through ScaleUP USA’s learning platform to government buyers (or fortune 500 companies) and their ecosystem. Typically, this Program identifies, companies whose approaches, products, platforms or services are unique, innovative, needed, and have a potential to succeed in the Federal Government or Fortune 500 accounts and approaches such companies for development of a sponsored “mini-course.”
Such mini-courses are typically 45-60 minutes in length, have value packed content, are a strong learning experience, are not a sales pitch but a trust and information building exercise, and are available on demand at scale, any time, anywhere via desktop, laptop, tablet or phone and includes audio, video, and presentations to the user/learner. The demonstration of the sponsoring companies product or service is used as show and tell material and discussions of existing clients are used as case studies for product selection, implementation, and performance improvement during the mini-course.
Along with the mini-course, ScaleUP USA also develops the course landing page like this one. Then NBC news media authors an attractive sponsored story for the company sponsor embeds the mini-course in it and embarks on a one-week social media marketing campaign for social engagement, brand awareness, and course registrations. Each new registered user/learner is reported to the company course sponsor so they can follow up with the registering party for additional information, one on one discussions, and the potential sale of the product. Company sponsors are also identified on the course landing page.
